GERUND AND INFINITIVE


VERBS FOLLOWED BY GERUND OR INFINITIVE


Ø     BEGIN, PROPOSE, FORBID, INTEND, START à same meaning

They started to answer/answering the letters

Ø     STOP, REMEMBER, FORGET à different meaning

Stop+ gerund (stop doing something)
Eg: Bob stopped going out with Gina

Stop+ infinitive (interrupt an action to do another action)
Eg: Can we stop to have some coffee?

Remember + gerund (something that happened in the past)

 Eg: I remember giving them their tickets

Remember + infinitive (refers to future) Eg: Remember to call Jane before you go.

Forget + gerund (we forgot something that happened in the past)

Eg: We forgot meeting the writer of the book.

Forget + infinitive (forget doing something) Eg: He always forgets to bring the keys.
